Private sales between Texas residents need no state background check, though selling to someone you know is barred from owning a firearm is a crime.

Carrying a gun in Galveston County

Since September 1, 2021, the Firearm Carry Act has let adults 21 and older who may lawfully own a firearm carry a handgun in Texas without a license, concealed or in a belt or shoulder holster, unless a conviction in the past five years for assault, deadly conduct, terroristic threat or certain disorderly conduct offenses bars them. The License to Carry is still issued statewide by the Texas Department of Public Safety, not by a county office. It costs $40, runs five years, and takes four to six hours of classroom instruction plus a range qualification with a certified instructor.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sets deer seasons county by county. Harris County and the rest of the Gulf Coast and East Texas sit in the North Zone, where archery runs October 3 to November 6, 2026, the general season runs November 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and the muzzleloader and special late seasons run January 4 to 17, 2027. The bag is four deer, no more than two bucks and no more than two antlerless, and in Galveston County only one buck may have an inside spread of 13 inches or more. Any legal firearm is allowed except rimfire ammunition, which may not be used on deer.

Galveston County sits in the North Zone for deer but has very little deer ground; the season that matters here is waterfowl, on South Zone dove and duck dates. The bay complex and the East Bay marshes pull redheads, pintail and teal down the coast every winter.

The Bolivar ferry runs across to the East Bay marshes, Galveston Island State Park covers the west end, and the bay and gulf here carry the heaviest waterfowl and fishing traffic on the upper coast.
