Carrying a gun in Jefferson County

Since September 1, 2021, the Firearm Carry Act has let adults 21 and older who may lawfully own a firearm carry a handgun in Texas without a license, concealed or in a belt or shoulder holster, unless a conviction in the past five years for assault, deadly conduct, terroristic threat or certain disorderly conduct offenses bars them. The License to Carry is still issued statewide by the Texas Department of Public Safety, not by a county office. It costs $40, runs five years, and takes four to six hours of classroom instruction plus a range qualification with a certified instructor.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sets deer seasons county by county. Harris County and the rest of the Gulf Coast and East Texas sit in the North Zone, where archery runs October 3 to November 6, 2026, the general season runs November 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and the muzzleloader and special late seasons run January 4 to 17, 2027. The bag is four deer, no more than two bucks and no more than two antlerless, and in Jefferson County only one buck may have an inside spread of 13 inches or more. Any legal firearm is allowed except rimfire ammunition, which may not be used on deer.

Jefferson County is in the North Zone for deer, the Central dove zone north of Interstate 10 and the North duck zone, where the regular split runs November 14 to 29, 2026 and December 5, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The J. D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area marshes south of town are the best known public waterfowl hunting on this end of the coast.

Big Thicket National Preserve units begin just north of town, the Neches bottom runs down to Sabine Lake, and the coastal marsh below Port Arthur is prime duck and goose country.
